AOU to Publish Changes to Bird Classifications

The American Ornithologists' Union will soon publish new classifications of North American birds in the July issue of The Auk.  The most striking changes are in the classification of warblers, including the elimination of the genus Dendroica, all of which will be moved over to the genus Setophaga (which currently only contains the American redstart (Setophaga ruticilla)).  While the final list has not been published, Ken Kaufmann offers an excellent overview of the many changes in this recent blog post based on information from the AOU website.

No word on when these changes might be incorporated into the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), the most comprehensive database of taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world and backbone to the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL).
