Nightjar Survey Resources

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for a US Nightjar Survey Route!  Below you will find the details you need to run your route.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!

  1. Check to see if there is a route near you that is available by checking this map.

  2. Contact Scott Anderson to let me know you would like to volunteer!

A full description of the survey protocol and instructions are available at the US Nightjar Survey Network.  Specifically, I encourage you to read over the protocol and participation pages.  When conducting a survey, make sure you:

  1. Read the protocol!

  2. Know your route.  Ideally, you should scope out the route during the day to make sure you know where your stops are.

  3. When deciding when to run your route, consider that this year, surveys must be run once during one of the two windows: May 28th and June 11th OR June 27th and July 11th.

  4. Print datasheets

  1. Follow the protocol as closely as possible.

  2. Record latitude and longitude coordinates using either a GPS or a smartphone app.

  1. Submit your datasheets (more on this later).

  2. Complete your volunteer forms.  These forms allow us to use your volunteer time to fund Wildlife Diversity programs at the NC Wildlife Resources Commission!
