Conservation and Status of Black Rail Workshop - Nov 12-14, 2013

Information from Mike Wilson, Center for Conservation Biology, concerning an upcoming Black Rail Workshop:

A workshop will be held to share information and reach a group consensus on the status and conservation of the Black Rail in USFWS Region 4 and the Gulf Coast.  The workshop will be held November 12, 13, & 14, 2013 at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and Complex headquarters office (694 Beech Hill Lane, Hardeeville, SC 29927).  Anyone interested in Black Rail conservation is welcome to attend.  Please RSVP with contact information by emailing to Mike Wilson (

This workshop will be a regional complement to the Northeast Black Rail workshop held at Prime Hook NWR on September 10 and 11, 2013.  Anyone interested in information about that workshop should contact me as well.

The Savannah workshop is made possible by a cooperative agreement between the Center for Conservation Biology and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  Troy Wilson, Regional Non-Game Biologist, Migratory Bird Program, USFWS and Jennifer Wheeler, Waterbird Coordinator, Division of Migratory Bird Management, USFWS have been instrumental in helping plan for this workshop.

A formal agenda has not been completed but the workshop is designed to reach consensus among participants on major conservation topics including; current status, population change, habitat breadth, threats, conservation strategies, among others.  We would plan on starting at noon on Nov. 12th and finishing early on Nov 14th around 4pm.  Most of the workshop time will allow on open discussion to broaden or shorten items within each topic group just mentioned and to complete a list of “most needed” projects for conservation of this species.
